Best way to dress for interviews

Share:

So many youths are ignorant of the fact that not all dressing is suitable for attending interviews. There are colours, styles that are not recommended for anyone to wear for an interview irrespective of the job the person is seeking to secure.

Dressing appropriately is important because the first judgment an interviewer makes is going to be based on how you look and what you are wearing. Remember the popular saying, “You are addressed the way you are dressed”.

It is also important to know that you don’t have to spend a lot of money or pour through fashion magazines to figure out what to wear to an interview.

You should go to the interview looking neat, tidy and well-dressed.

Generally, experts suggest that a job interview calls for you to wear a professional or business attire. An unprofessional outfit can distract an interviewer from seeing your great qualities.

It is also important you note that the type of dress will vary depending on the type of job and company you’re interviewing with. Many companies always love to stick to corporate wear which is the international standard.

For men, this might mean a suit jacket and slacks with a shirt and tie or a sweater and button-down. For women, a blouse and dress pants or a statement dress is appropriate.

Remember, while you always want to dress to make the best impression, the outfit you choose depends on whether you’re interviewing at a company with a formal dress code, at a casual start-up, or for an informal summer job or internship.

An expert said if you wear a suit to an interview for a camp counselor, or a T-shirt to an interview at a bank, it’ll send the message that you don’t truly understand what’s involved in the role.

It also advised that if you’re wondering about what to wear to an interview, the most important thing to keep in mind is that you should look professional and polished regardless of the type of job you’re seeking.

However, no matter what the position and even if there’s no dress code, you should always look neat, tidy and well dressed.

All interviewees should consider colour when selecting an interview outfit and avoid wearing anything too bright or flashy like red or yellow that will distract the hiring manager.

Find the middle ground with a light-coloured, for men a khaki blazer is less harsh than a black or grey suit coat. It’s a great piece because it straddles the boundary between business casual and business formal. Worn with a tie, it is a bit more business formal. Worn without a tie, it’s a solid option for when you aren’t quite sure of the dress code.

Neutral colours like brown, black and navy are good choices, as they match many different shirt colours, including light blue, pink, green, or the white button-down shirt here.

For ladies, there are lots of ways to style your hair for a job interview. While some options are trendy and others are more traditional, remember that your hairstyle should not distract the employer. You will want your hair to be professional and polished, like your entire outfit.

Like your hair, your makeup should not distract the interviewer. This is not the time for bold lipstick or glittery eye shadow. Instead, keep makeup subtle and unobtrusive.  Remember to go low on colognes and accessories.
